He Worlds Largest Company Essays

He Worlds Largest Company Essays He Worlds Largest Company Essay He Worlds Largest Company Essay Apple Inc. He worlds largest company, which had introduces a serious of consumer products during the past years. Apple managed a global supply chain with creative development in the United Stated. The outsourced manufacturing of Apple Inc. Is in Asia and components sourced from suppliers around the world. With its development, the stock of Apple was increasing continually. This situation was clear to Jessica that Apples product range would get more complex in the next few years. Therefore, she wanted to take a look at the companys supply chain (Mark, 2014). The content of this paper includes the description of Apple Inc. The new product development, how the company manages the global supply chain and its supply chain security. This paper will focus the analysis on the compliance in supply chain management and some issues about security of Apply Inc. Supply Chain Planning New Product Development Company reviewable is a brand that we are familiar with. It is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures consumer electronics and computer software products. The companys best-known hardware products include computers, the pod and the phone. Apple software includes the Mac SO X operating system and the tunes media browser. Besides, Apple provides customers who are professional musician that a suite of professional audio and a suite of audio tools (Mark, 2014). According to the news of Apple, for the full-year results, Apple generated a massive $171 billion in revenue and $37 billion in profit. Why Apple has been widely successful? Firstly, its distinctive advertising campaigns. Apples advertising always full of creative ideas and inspirational. Secondly, its philosophy of comprehensive aesthetic gives us a deep impression. Furthermore, Apple has established a unique reputation in the consumer electronics industry (Mark, 2014). New Product Developmentally chain planning at Apple is the classic example of new product development. Its the integration of R;D, Marketing and various functions under supply chain management. As we know, the high technology products always have a short product development cycle. Apples phone lifestyle was closer to one year. The time period between phone 4, phones, phone and phones launched almost one year. So the innovation and creativity play a significant role in Apple Inc. The researchers in Apple should come up the new ideas continually to catch up customers steps. From the case, the new product development department in Apple coordinated a wide variety of stakeholders, including internal groups such as hardware, software and production. Apple preferred the entire supply chain internally to control instead of outsourcing its manufacturing to third- party supplier (Mark, 2014). The distance between designers and suppliers in Apple is closely. Unlike other electronics manufacturers, they might use the outsourcing for the entire production, management and their supply chain to a third-party service provider. On the contrast, the designers in Apple even spent months living out of tool rooms in order to be close to suppliers and manufacturers. They intended to help to adjust the process of industrial. During this process, when the designers came up the new ideas and need to change, the manufacturers can get the information at the same time, and then complete the final products. The creative designing department of Apple is in California, where Apple developed the new technologies. At meantime, Apple put forward the idea that makes full use of acquired technology firms, whose products could be used in Apples development of products and services. Besides of that, Apple conducted improve the market research ND product testing to refine the upgrade being considered. Apple put the cost data together includes a list of parts and names of suppliers. In this condition, the potential quality defects were identified and decrease the risk (Mark, 2014). Apple s technology competitors typically have separate R;D departments and separate profit and loss accountability for each product segment. For this management, the manager cannot focus on one thing. In contrast, Apple was highly integrated. It has the centralized R;D and accounting for the entire company. The centralized organization makes the entire company become a whole part. This can be easy to control and managers could find and solve the problems timely. If one department has requirements, another organization will follow up new methods. It was an effective strategy for Apple Inc. After the supply chain planning, Apple Inc. Needs to manage its supply chain and improve its security supply chain to solve some risk issues. Apply Inc. Global Supply Chain Management and Security Supply Chain According to the textbook, A supply chain is Just that. It is a chain of interconnected links that facilitates the movement of supplies, or in other words, cargo, goods, material, products, etc. (Airway, 2010). An effective supply chain management is an important step that needs to be taken by companies to increase the profits and avoid making mistakes. Apply Inc. Is the technology company belongs to the U. S. However, the supply chain of Apple is global. Apple gathers the research and development base in the United States. Besides, it has 156 suppliers, assembly operations in China and retail stores in its supply chain. During the management, there are many security issues will occur. The following content will introduce some key parts of Apples global supply chain, including procurement, manufacturing, logistics and detail experience to explain how Apple Inc. Solves security issues combine the supply chain management. Prestidigitations to the case, the key components of Apple products contained were often sourced from single and stable manufacturers. The reason is that the different mobile phone firms often used the same components. Due to the huge volume of products, the materials form popular suppliers were out of stock sometimes. To counteract this potential risk of supply chain issue, Apple was required to make sure the steady supply of key parts by procuring parts from suppliers production capacity in advance of need. Furthermore, in order to achieve cost targets and supply assurance, Apple had a program that allowed it to buy capital equipment for suppliers (Mark, 2014). It is an effective method to make double insurance for Apple and its suppliers. Apple purchases the sourcing of materials and normal components are from various suppliers in different countries. The main countries are United States, China, Other Asian countries and Europe. All main components for the Apple products are manufacture in the United States and exported to other countries for assemble final products. The United States is not only he worlds largest electronics consumer base country, but also the main market of Apple products. It has too many opportunity and customer demand. Europe is the best development mainland in the world. This country has advanced transportation such as railway and waterway. It is very convenient for Apple to purchase material and components. Apple want to make sure of its security supply chain. So Apple considered the country that has the high technology companyJapan. The components from Japan always have high quality. It makes sure the quality of material. Overtime, Apple established a formalized list of expectations for suppliers ND developed relationships with suppliers. It helps Apple expand the scale operations to increasing the customer demand for existing and new products. Moreover, Apple makes full use of its deep pockets to place high volume pre-orders with suppliers in order to ensure the profitable production capacity. This strategy can prevent competitors from get the same manufacturing resources. The sourcing is so important for the supply chain, so Apple Inc. Make sure the sourcing is never shortage. The authors analysis report shows that the motivation behind the addition of a new supplier is to diversify supply chain risks. The advantage of additional new supplier will provide a greater flexibility to Apple. In addition, Apple can make faster react to supply chain disruptions. However, there might be a potential security issue will be appeared. The new supplier maybe has safe and ethical manufacturing practices. For example, the new supplier provides the materials that have toxic element or it maybe damage the environment. Apple needs to be in a position to sever ties with any supplier that does not comply with its Code of Conduct. If the new supplier does not obey the ethical rules, it may lead to some potential problems, such s pose a threat to the quality of sourcing. Therefore, a good procurement is a base of supply chain management. ManufacturingAccording to the textbook, Many clients have or own their own plants, mills, etc. And ship to their own places of manufacture or assembly, or ship to their customers who utilize that material (Airway, 2010). After Apple Inc. Purchases raw materials from various sources then get them shipped to an assembling plant in China. Foxing is an original design manufacture for clients such as Apple, Sony and Black Berry. Foxhounds headquarter is in Taiwan, it was the rods largest electro nics manufacture with too many employees in 2012. In addition, Foxing has factories in Asia, Europe, Mexico and South America (Mark, 2014). Why Apple Inc. Has sent the components and materials assembled in China? The common reason is China has cheaper labor cost and the environment relax. Besides that, Apples executives think the foreign workers flexibility; diligence and industrial skills have outpaced the American workers. The labor cost in China is lower than America. Although Apple has put the labors environment and benefit in the first place, this many occurred a security problem about the materials during the assembly process. Labor is an important element during the supply chain security. They provide the service and benefit for company. It is the responsibility for company to treat them well. The personal safety concerns the security issues of supply chain. There was news before 2009 that it claims that Apple used the materials that include toxic chemicals from its supply chain. Both poisonous are still in use at Chinese factories. According the case, almost 137 workers at an Apple supplier in China were exposed to the toxic chemicals. When they assembled the product, they inhaled the toxic substance into their lung. As time passes, after two years later, some workers felt their health getting worse and worse. They wanted Apple to help pay for treatment. When this situation happened, the process of manufacturing will be delay and the companys reputation will be ruined. In addition, the company will lose much money to compensation. To solve this problem, Apple bans two chemicals from product assembly and concluded the more safety alternatives will be excised. Moreover, the two chemicals also ban use as cleaning agents in the final assembly recess. Apple Inc. Pays more attention to recover this security issues. In June 2014, Green America with some organizations wrote a letter to Apple, and let Apple know the chemicals must be more transparent at its manufactures. Furthermore, the groups also asked Apple to create a fund to treat factory workers who have injured for making Apple products. There is another event that Apple should pay attention. According to Apples supplier responsibility progress report, the standard labor policy of company states that workers maximum working time is 60 hours per week and to get at least one day off per week. And yet, more than 50 percent of their workers of its suppliers exceeded these low limits. The employees have too much pressure when they work. In fact, working conditions at Foxing, Apples partner for final assembly and some core components, have been bad enough that Apple has gotten a bit of reports of accidents, suicides, and labor strife (Mark, 2014). This condition was too bad for one Technology Company. Apple has been working to improve labor conditions throughout its supply chain, including improve workers salary and better oversight over the factory conditions. Apple must focus on this issue and avoid it room happening again. Apples Green Supply Changing the supply chain management, a significant issue cannot be ignored, which is environment protection. Due to Apples manufacturing factories usually in China, where the labor cost are low and environment standards are lax. So Apples Supplier Code of requires that during the manufacturing processes, they should put the environmentally responsible in the first place. There is question, how does Apple really know that contract manufacturers and their suppliers meet such requirements? Apple Inc. Really adopted measures to let them meet these requirements. Apple says it audits all of its suppliers, and that this information is made public on its Web site. Then summarizes those auditing efforts to its company reports. Here is an example from the case, Apple representatives physically inspect manufacturing facilities, talk with senior management, and even conduct confidential interviews with randomly selected employees from the line (Mark, 2014). As mentioned before, Apple used the environmentally sourcing instead of sourcing with toxic chemicals. That was one of the effective methods to recover this issue. This measure help Apple earned more petition and increase responsibility to employees. Logistics logistics is an integral part of supply chain for every company, especially the technology company. Logistics includes the transportation, storage and inventory. For the transportation, air appropriate for lighter, smaller, and higher priority items. It is the fastest mode of transportation. On the contrast, water transportation is extremely slow and let the products suffer damage easily. Most of technology products have high value and cost. In addition, the customer demand increase rapidly when the new product launched, especially the holidays. Therefore, in order to satisfy customers demand at first time, Apple orders products by air instead of sea. This is because shipping products by ship takes a lot compared to airfreight. Shipping by air has another advantages that it is safer than water. When the package was broken and leaking the seawater, the products will be damaged totally. In this particular case, Apple will suffer great losses. If customers have ordered the product online, Apple need to give them an account why the deliver time has been delayed. So air transportation is the best choice. In addition, Apple had a reverse logistics system, including the management of warranty claims, trade-ins and Apples recycle and reuse program. The reverse logistics system contributed to Apples success. Not only saving the cost, but also improving the customer service experience. Traditionally, when customers intend to return a product, they should have to bring the receipt back to Apple store. The employees would take the item and issue a refund. Then hold the defective item until delivered back to the manufacturer. In order to make sure the purchase details, Apple allowed customers to enter data about the defect on the Apple website and he each products serial number. After that, Apple would send email to customers within half a day to let them know if the product sill under warranty and the information about return. After these steps complete, the box with addressed and stamped would send to customers by express parcel service. Of course, the shipping label and receipt for the return were in the box. Apple would ask the UPS, Feeder or DEL to pick up the package. Through this reverse logistics system, Apple has improved the customer satisfaction and eliminated the likelihood of customer error when processing a return (Mark, 2014). The storage and inventory management are key elements to Apples success. The storage for Apple is spacious and safer cause Apple products have high value that need security measures to protect. In addition, the storage of Apple has monitoring system. The manager can control the inventory through the camera. Apple has much storage distribute in different countries and cities. The inventory is another essential parts. If asked, what has made Apple an iconic brand, the answers would be its innovations and sleek design. Almost everyone would forget another important factor that has helped in catapulting Apple eight to the top, which is its properly managed inventory. According to an article, Apple averages Just 5. 3 days worth of inventory on hand at any given time, which means that every five days, Apple needs to replenish its inventory to prevent out of stock. For Apple Inc. , why is it so important to keep as little inventory on hand as possible? The reason is that company needs spent too much money to store products in their warehouses everyday. The company need budget for inventory. In addition, with the technology always improving, high -tech manufactures cant afford to keep o many products in stock. That because if an announcement from a competitor or a new innovation will change everything suddenly, the company have no time to deal with the inventory, so the value of their products will be decreased and the company will under much pressure. Therefore, remaining flexible is so important for companies (Clara, 2014). As we know, Apple has plenty of customers and need huge numbers of products, however, instead of keep too much inventory, Apple intend to short its inventory. Apple realized that control over their inventory is necessary. It is also the secret to Apples success. Theyve discovered the best way to control costs and meet their customers needs that is to find the right balance of inventory in locations across the country and the world. After realized this situation, Apple build many locations to balance the inventory. Thus, Apple increased the inventory turnover by decreasing average inventory. If Apple keep more stocks, these are more likely to be obsolete or damaged. In addition, due to Apples product life cycle is longer than seasonal items, so that Apple is not easily affected by seasonal factors. After the inventory management, the distribution and customer service also important for Apple supply chain management issues. We know that Apple relied on intermediate warehouses at UPS and Feeder and had its own warehouses in California. Apple had to make sure it has many sales outlets, includes online stores, retail stores, direct sales force, wholesalers and retail network. They need to manage the product stock according to the demand forecast (Mark, 2014). Forecasting is necessary tool to Apple. The forecasting method can help Apple keep inventory balance in order to reduce risk of out of stock or excess inventory. For the customer service, the company had a reverse logistics system as well. It includes encompassing the management of warranty claims, trade-ins and Apples recycle and reuse program. Managing reverse logistics effectively contributed to Apples success, both on a cost level and on a customer service experience level (Mark, 2014). We are familiar with Apple customer service. It has 30 warranty that if the products has some problems, customer need to bring the receipt to Apple store and exchange new one. Besides, after Apples new product launched, customers can add a little money o trade-ins. That is a good deal for Apple fans. Through its reverse logistics, the customer service system become integral and rapidly. Apple has improved customer satisfaction, and lowered the number of calls to its technical support services. In addition, it has eliminated the likelihood of customer error when processing a return. For example, using an incorrect address. Apple focuses on every part of its logistics system. It was monitoring every handcuff point -? loading dock, airport, truck depot and distribution center -? to make sure each unit was accounted for (Mark, 2014). Apple has many employees in the retail store in order to make sure every customer can be serviced. According to many former employees, executives at suppliers, and management experts familiar with the companys operations, Apple has built a closed ecosystem where it exerts control on nearly every piece of the supply chain, from design to retail store. Above all, Apple has considered the security issue and control every part of its supply chain. Through this management, Apple ensured that every part would avoid make mistakes during supply chain process, including transportation, inventory and customer service. Retail ExperienceApple has about 424 retail stores in 16 countries around the world. Additionally Apple stores was available in 39 countries (Mark, 2014). The companys retail stores were typically located at high-traffic locations in quality shopping malls. One of the Apples goals is make sure a high-quality buying experience and attract new customers. The stores were designed to simplify and enhance the explanation and marketing of the companys products and related solutions. In the Apple store, the employees have rich experience and knowledgeable personnel who provided product advice, service ND use other accessories to make presentation to explain or answer customers question (Mark, 2014). Every time I go to the Apple store, I always get intimacy from its employees even I return or exchange products. There is another strategy for Apple to forecast its production and inventory on a daily basis. Apple monitored product sales by store by the hour and it relied on this information to complete this task. Apple Inc. Has a wonderful supply chain management to keep away from the risk. Information Electrification leakage also plays a significant role in supply chain security. When the information of one company is leaking, it will lead to risk issues, such as customer demand decrease; competitor will take place your position and occupy the market. Although Apples supply chain has tight control, the information leaking also happened to Apple Inc. Apple adopted many measures to prevent information leaking. What is different about Apples launch planning is the extreme secrecy attached it. To ensure the secrecy was maintained throughout the assembly process, Apple places electronic monitors in some boxes of components to track them room Apples headquarters in Cupertino (Mark, 2014).

Making Hiding Haelo in the Reedsy Book Editor Making Hiding Haelo in the Reedsy Book Editor Tara Holladay is the author of Hiding Haelo. We're thrilled to share with you that she used the Reedsy Book Editor to print her book with Amazon's KDP Print. Since we felt that being able to export a print ready file straight from your browser will empower many authors who want to self-publish, it was a proud moment for us when we actually saw this beautiful book for the first time. Read on to know how Tara went from manuscript to printed book.My fellow Reedsy-ites, I am a perfectionist. When it came to Hiding Haelo, the first book in my YA series, I wanted every step of the way done right. Years of writing, editing, marketing prep, and an incredible amount of industry research brought me to a point of exhilarated exhaustion. (Just go with me on that. It totally makes sense in my head.)   Each step both thrilled me with progress and hammered me with work.I'm also a voracious reader, at one point plowing through five or six novels a week. (Pregnant. Six months of bed-rest.) A signif icant portion of those novels were cheap, self-published Kindles. At six a week, they had to be cheap. I saw every self-pub mistake in the book. Literally. Both on the voice/plot/content end of things, and the proofreading/formatting end of things. It drove me crazy. The Reedsy Book EditorAs thrilled as I am with the final printed novel, I greedily look forward to the updates. The Editor is really good, and it's only getting better.I still get butterflies when I think back to day my first printed â€Å"proof† copy arrived at my doorstep. What an incredible time to be an author! There is an unprecedented amount of resources at our fingertips. With more resources, comes higher quality. And higher quality allows indie author-publishers a bigger stake in influencing the publishing industry. The reputation with self-published books is changing for the better.Props, Reedsy. You’ve given us authors the ability to format a clean, beautiful book. And I now have a bigger budget f or marketing than I would have otherwise. Nuclear Terrorism - U.S. Military Prevention Research Paper

Nuclear Terrorism - U.S. Military Prevention - Research Paper Example The weapons of mass destruction like the nuclear weapons were also created to find a better solution for the war, to maintain a peaceful environment and to protect the sovereignty of a region. The United States of America is the first country that developed, tested and imposed on nuclear weapons. The results were seen to be drastic and a kilogram of a nuclear matter is enough to make destruction that a more than 20 kiloton of TNT can. Thus a smaller amount of nuclear matter is as much effective as tons of explosives. Thus it is economical, diverse and drastic for a war. However, the nuclear attack was imposed only one time by the United States on Japan and after that, the attack is still not imposed on any other country under any condition. As the human race realized that there is an infinite amount of energy in the nuclei of the atom, many scientists began trying to find solution to extract the massive amount of energy for the civilian as well as military use. However, the first scientist that discovered the method to unstable the nuclei of the atom was ‘Enrico Fermi’ while scientist named as ‘Leo Szilard’ became his second in discovering the immense amount of energy. The more the science developed in the area, the field progressed similarly. However, at first, the technology was not tested to be utilized for the civilian purposes. The energy remained undiscoverable until Hiroshima and Nagasaki were attacked by the United States of America as response to World War 2. The attacks were considered as the consequence of the Japanese invasion and the Japanese attack on the ‘Pearl Harbor’ in ‘1941’. However, the consequences were drastic and no one after the Hiroshima and N agasaki attacks was permitted to impose such an attack on any country under any situation.

Museums & Heritage in a Globalized World Coursework

Museums & Heritage in a Globalized World - Coursework Example There are so many stakes in Greece building the new Acropolis Museum; being a state-of-the-art museum, Acropolis Museum is likely to boost Greece’s cultural tourism and the number of tourists who visiting the country. A reunion of the Parthenon sculptures in the Acropolis Museum will, in particular, lead to a surge in the tourist numbers in Athens (Elaza 45). The special museum serves to counter some of the arguments raised by the British Museum in its quest to keep the Marbles in London. One of the arguments advanced by the British Museum against repatriating the sculptures is that the Greeks will not provide the greatest care required for the Parthenon sculptures (The British Museum, www.britishmuseum.org). Building the Acropolis Museum can counters this argument as follows effectively. Firstly, the new museum is an outstanding with the best management and curatorial capability (The British Museum, www.britishmuseum.org). As such, it provides such an ideal place to showcase the Parthenon sculptures. Secondly, the location of the Acropolis Museum is such that the museum is close to the ancient monument. Since the architectural design of the new museum’s Parthenon galleries closely fits that of the Parthenon itself, preserving the marbles in this museum would return to the marbles some of their architectural significance. Keeping the marbles in London makes lose this important feature (Acropolis Museum girds for Battle over Marbles, youtube.com) Another argument advanced by the British Museum is that the Parthenon sculptures belong â€Å"to the world.† Consequently, they should be left in London where â€Å"everyone† can get an opportunity to enjoy them. The construction of the state-of-the-art and world-class Acropolis Museum in Athens falsifies the claim that London is the best place for people to enjoy the Parthenon sculptures. It is also safe to

The Romantic Movement Essay Example for Free

The Romantic Movement Essay Mary Shelleys Frankenstein was written at the time of the Romantic Movement; characterized by innovation (rather than traditionalism), spontaneity (Shelley was brought up in Geneva where freedom of expression was important), an idealisation of nature and the belief of living in an age of new beginnings and high possibilities. All of these characteristics are found early on in the novel in Waltons letters, the discovery of the North Pole being the innovation and new beginning. In this novel, the Romanticism significantly complements the Gothic genre. Robert Walton is a Romantic, with a thirst to express his intense imaginings and daydreams to companion. His dreams of exploration were first inspired by poems and stories and childish fantasies at a young age. As Walton prepares for his journey to the North Pole, the beauty of nature in St. Petersburg seem to him a hint of how the new world will look when he gets there. His excitement is heightened by the brisk and picturesque world around him. However, his beautiful surroundings are also very perilous, and end up being the reason he has to return. Walton describes Frankenstein as completely broken-down by grief, but still able to appreciate the natural beauty of the world around him, which seems remarkable. A man destroyed by sorrow can still look up at the night sky and feel some sense of relief, happiness, or awe at the fabulous beauty that surrounds him: Even broken in spirit as he is, no one can feel more deeply than he does the beauties of nature. The starry sky, the sea, and every sight afforded by these wonderful regions, seems still to have the power of elevating his soul. This appreciation of beauty in a novel so filled with brutality seems an odd contrast, but is elementary for the distinct natural settings that we will come across in the novel, all corresponding to the emotions of the characters involved. The North Pole is a suitably cold, desolate and isolated setting for the meeting of Walton, Victor and the daemon. Mary Shelley also had very liberal religious views. At the time she wrote Frankenstein, Catholicism was very oppressing and she was very against it. In his letters, Walton wishes to discover things that will benefit mankind. We later find out he shares this godlike ambition with Frankenstein. Shelley uses biblical language to emphasise this: Heaven shower down blessings on you. He will be like a celestial spirit that has a halo around him. elevates me to heaven. Walton seems to be playing God or somebody of high divinity by generously giving out heavenly phrases. This is quite foreboding, as the oppressiveness in the historical context also suggests that all is not well. This is backed up by Walton acting against his fathers dying injunction; not to embark in a seafaring life. This is not a very divine thing to do. This is an underlying theme at this early stage in the novel, but as Victor confesses his story of playing God, we realise that this theme mutely prepares us for the tale that is about to unfold. The desire to find out the unknown and to be the first to discover the unseen is a tragic flaw of both Walton and the Victor Frankenstein, and from the very first letter, the theme of glory is heavily established. Walton states: I preferred glory. Of course there are only a select few who have achieved this timeless goal, yet those who pursue it are encouraged by the immortality and recognition awarded to the victorious. Mary Shelleys Frankenstein is a literary rumination of the quest for glory, Waltons discovery of the North Pole being the backdrop for the tale of the title characters pursuit of the knowledge of life.

Free My Antonia Essays: The Growth of Jim Burden :: My Antonia Essays

The Growth of Jim Burden in My Antonia "The movement from possession to loss, from union to separation, is the deep and central pattern of Jim Burden's experience in My Antonia." (Fisher-Wirth) I believe that this quote given by the critic Fisher-Wirth somewhat explains the life of Jim Burden and that although he went through both gains and losses throughout his life; he learned the meaning and purpose of his life with Antonia. In the beginning of the novel, Jim had a family but was soon abandoned by them do to both of their deaths. He was then on his way to his grandparents house in Nebraska to begin a new and different life. At this point, he began a union with both his grandparents as well as Antonia. Antonia and Jim became very close friends and went through many childhood experiences together. Their friendship was soon torn apart when Ambrosch and Jake engaged in a quarrel which separated the two families for quite some time. But once again, the families resolve their differences and become close again. (Chapter 1) When Chapter 2 begins, Jim and his family are separated from Antonia's because of their new move to town. After this separation, Jim and Antonia were brought together again when Antonia came to work in town. This pattern repeats once again as the result of Jim going off to college. He loses touch with Antonia but then, through Lena, becomes connected to Antonia again. As a result of this, Jim goes back home to visit for a short time and then leaves for New York. Finally, twenty years later, Jim travels back to see Antonia and her new, "enlarged" family. He was glad to see that Antonia was finally happy again and enjoyed meeting all her children as well as her husband. With Jim's trip back to Black Hawk, he was able to tie his whole life together. After leaving Antonia's home, Jim felt that his life had made a circle. He realized that through all his gains and losses, the past that he shared with Antonia was so precious. The Role of Religion in Presidential Elections

The Role of Religion in Presidential Elections â€Å"The relationship between faith, reason, and fear sometimes resembles†¦rock, paper, scissors (45). † This is the opening sentence in chapter two of Al Gore’s book, The Assault on Reason. In this chapter Gore talks about how fear takes over reason, reason challenges faith, and eventually faith defeats fear. This is the way that our society worked when he wrote the book, and it has not changed for the better since then, although it has not necessarily gotten substantially worse.Today religion is still a huge player in political debate because people are guided, for the most part, by their morals and it is commonly held that morals come mainly from religious teachings. This is a complex subject because that also opens the door to the idea that atheists, agnostics, etc are not moral people because they are not religious. By that logic, only the religious should be allowed to lead our country because they are the only moral people. Do we believe that all religions are good, though? Are some better than others?Ideally, and under our Constitution, no; all religions are equal in the eyes of our laws. However, there are stigmas attached to certain religions, and to many non-religious people there is a stigma on religion itself. So why, then, does religion play such a large role in political campaigns? It’s simple; because we view religion as having a direct correlation with morals, politicians, political parties, and interest groups can use fear to override our reason in order to sway our opinions. Historically, here in the United States, our citizens have elected white Christian men to the office of the President. To go even further, we have elected Protestant Christians to office. It is apparent that, political parties aside, we have a preference as to what our President should be, religiously. We have only had one Roman Catholic President, John F. Kennedy; during his campaign there were fear s that he would follow the wishes of the Bishop rather than the people. To some degree we still hold these beliefs. If we did not, religion wouldn’t be used as a fear tactic. The colonists who came from England were escaping religious repression, and were the inspiration for our freedom of religion. In modern times, we seem to have lost sight of that. Four years ago, Barack Obama was running for office for the first time. Among many other controversies, i. e. whether he was actually born a U. S. citizen, was the rumor that Obama is a Muslim and not a Christian as he has time and time again identified himself to be. In the United States, where we have the freedom of religion outlined in our Constitution, people were worried that someone of a Muslim background would be able to become the most powerful man in the world.A large part of that fear certainly stems from the attacks on September 11, 2001 but surely there is no legitimate reason to fear Muslims other than the combinatio n of our ignorance of Muslim culture and faith, and the fear that is instilled in us not only by political parties but by non-affiliated extremist groups as well, that say all Muslims are terrorists. Barack Obama went on to win the election, which is not surprising because the public could see right through these shaky scare tactics. However, this has not stopped people from trying to use it in the current election. In a ninety second audio clip taken from a call between a Republican volunteer and a constituent, the volunteer calls Obama a Muslim and says that he wants to take away their Medicare (Dixon, 2012). So even though this tactic has not worked in the past, it doesn’t do much to stop people from trying to spread these rumors again. Between the 2008 election and the upcoming election not much has changed, although in this year’s election the religion card will likely play a larger role in who will win the electorate.Mitt Romney is a Mormon, and while the small ou tcry claiming Obama to be a Muslim was never on firm ground, there is no question of Romney’s religion. This is where we fall back to the days of Kennedy’s campaign. People are worried that Romney will place his religious views before the welfare of our nation. The accusation that people are making is that he is incapable of leading our country because he is a Mormon. Some of the big issues on his plate currently involve women’s rights. As a Mormon, he does not believe in abortion and has made it clear that he would try to pass legislation that sets the beginning of life at conception. While there are certainly non-Mormon people who do not believe in abortion, this is being attributed to his religion. Fifty years ago, or even twenty-five to thirty years ago, this would have been a non-issue. Romney’s beliefs would have been more in line with the more conservative nature of the time period. Needless to say Mitt Romney faces an uphill battle on his quest for the White House.Given all of this information, it would seem very apparent that religion plays a huge role in presidential elections. This is true, but not necessarily in the way that one might think. According to an article in the Huffington Post, most Americans say that it is important for the President to have strong religious beliefs, even if the beliefs differ from their own. This information seems to undermine what the media would have us believe. In addition, constituents tend not to know or be confused about the candidates’ actual religion.Only four in ten citizens could correctly identify Mitt Romney’s religion and forty-six percent of American’s said they did not know (Neroulias, 2011). This goes back to the idea of morals; those who have religion are moral and good, while those who do not cannot be moral and therefore should not lead our country. In the end, politics have not done much to change for the better. We still fear religions that we have no need to fear, and this is largely because fear tactics are used every day by political parties as well as extremists who have the ability to make it into mainstream media.Absolutely anyone can start a rumor that a candidate is Muslim and can’t be trusted, and that could catch like wildfire, or it could be blown off for the most part. It is also exponentially easier to take a candidates religion and a single belief, and then convince the country that he should not be President. Another thing that we see is that citizens place a large emphasis on religion itself, but there is still a large stigma on religions that are not traditional Christian. Until we become collectively more knowledgeable about other religions and debates become more informed, not much could possibly change.References Dixon, M. (2012, September 27). Cyber Bullying Essay

Peer to peer bulling is nothing new. It has been going on for generation after generation. However the times have now changed since new technology has made it possible for peers to bully one another without even having to be face to face. This form of bullying is called â€Å"Cyber Bullying†. Teens turn fun, needed devices into â€Å"weapons† through the use of social networking websites, chat rooms and text messaging and there are even more ways possible, and through this they call each other names, belittle, and threaten kids to in some serious cases, the point of suicide. I believe it’s important to be educated about Cyber Bullying because it will help prevent it from further happening, it will show bullies just what reactions they are causing to the victims emotionally, and will show kids who are being bullied that it is OK to consult an adult about it. If we were to educate people about cyber bullying, it could show people that there is a very bad problem going on right this moment. Victims don’t speak up, Schools just don’t notice it, so it is the educated ones jobs to seek it out and help the issue. Once something is posted on the internet it will stay there forever, and if you know how to use a computer or mobile device, you can see just what is happening to your child or what your child is doing to others, anybody’s child really. Cyber Bullies in most cases are either teenagers who have been bullied or have friends that bully and want to fit in, look cool, and to just show they have power over other peers. The I-SAFE Foundation reported that over half of teens and adolescents have been bullied online and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. These numbers are mind blowing, over half? We have a problem and we need to solve it. If you see a possible case of cyber bullying, report it to the school board and/or Police. If your a teen and you are being or know of someone being cyber bullied, tell a parent, guardian, favorite teacher, big brother, anyone who can do something about it, a number of teens commit suicide everyday because of cyber bullying, and you telling one person can save someones life. Most cyber bullies just don’t know what it does to the victim on the other side. Educating victims about cyber bullying is one of the most important of all. The victims need to learn that it is ok  to report a cyber bullying, it won’t stop any other way, unless the bully gets bored which usually, is never the case. After a amount of time of getting bullied the victims confidence goes down, along with self esteem, and questions come up on, why am I alone? Victims are never alone, there will always be an adult that can help you. So far there have been around 13 million suicides cause by cyber bullying, if you thought one was too many, well try 13 million. The Cyber Bully Research Center reports that; almost every case of the suicides in of teens and adolescents thinking there is no way out, they are completely alone, and there is nothing to do about it. Well they can do something about it but even yet, Fewer than 1 in 5 cyber bullying incidents are reported to law enforcement, and 58% of teens never even tell their parents anything about the situation. It is very important to be educated about cyber bullying because of all of the good that comes from understanding all that goes on. People being educated will save lives, help victims lives improve ten fold, it shows the bullies just what they are doing to the victims, and can prevent this issue to ever be forced upon any teen and adolescent.

Leísmo and the Use of Le in Spanish

Leà smo and the Use of 'Le' in Spanish Do you always follow the rules of proper English in your speaking and writing? Probably not. So it probably would be too much to ask native Spanish speakers to do the same. And thats especially true when it comes to using pronouns such as le and lo. When it comes to breaking the rules of Spanish - or at least of varying from standard Spanish - there are probably no rules that are broken more often than those involving third-person object pronouns. The rules are broken so often that there are three common names for variations from whats considered normal, and the Spanish Royal Academy (the official arbiter of what is proper Spanish) accepts the most common variation from the norm but not others. As a Spanish student, youre normally best off learning, knowing and using standard Spanish; but you should be aware of variations so they dont confuse you and, ultimately, so you know when its OK to deviate from what you learn in class. Standard Spanish and Objective Pronouns The chart below shows the third-person objective pronouns that are recommended by the Academy and are understood by Spanish speakers everywhere. Number and gender Direct object Indirect oject singular masculine ("him" or "it") lo (Lo veo. I see him or I see it.) le (Le escribo la carta. I am writing him the letter.) singular feminine ("her" or "it") la (La veo. I see her or I see it.) le (Le escribo la carta. I am writing her the letter.) plural masculine ("them") los (Los veo. I see them.) les (Les escribo la carta. I am writing them the letter.) plural feminine ("them") las (Las veo. I see them.) les (Les escribo la carta. I am writing them the letter.) In addition, the Academy allows the use of le as a singular direct object when referring to a male person (but not a thing). Thus I see him could correctly be translated as either lo veo or le veo. Substituting le for lo is known as leà smo, and this recognized substitution is extremely common and even preferred in parts of Spain. Other Types of Leà smo While the Academy recognizes le as a singular direct object when referring to a male person, that isnt the only type of leà smo you may hear. While the use of les as a direct object when referring to multiple persons is less common, it also is frequently used and is listed as a regional variation in some grammar texts despite what the Academy may say. Thus you may hear les veo (I see them) when referring to males (or a mixed male/female group) even though the Academy would recognize only los veo. Although less common than either of the above variations, in some regions le also can be used as a direct object instead of la to refer to females. Thus, le veo might be said for either I see him or I see her. But in many other areas, such a construction might be misunderstood or create ambiguity, and you should probably avoid using it if youre learning Spanish. In some areas, le may be used to denote respect when used as a direct object, especially when speaking to the person le refers to. Thus, one might say quiero verle a usted (I want to see you) but quiero verlo a Roberto (I want to see Robert), although -lo would technically be correct in both instances. In areas where le can substitute for lo (or even la), it frequently sounds more personal than the alternative. Finally, in some literature and older texts, you may see le used to refer to an object, thus le veo for I see it. Today, however, this usage is considered substandard. Loà smo and Laà smo In some areas, parts of Central America and Colombia in particular, you may hear lo and la used as indirect objects instead of le. However, this usage is frowned on elsewhere and is probably best not imitated by people learning Spanish. More About on Objects The distinction between direct and indirect objects isnt quite the same in Spanish as it is in English, and thus the pronouns that represent them are sometimes called accusative and dative pronouns, respectively. Although a full listing of the differences between English and Spanish objects is beyond the scope of this article, it should be noted that some verbs use dative (indirect object) pronouns where the English would use a direct object. One common such verb is gustar (to please). Thus we correctly say le gusta el carro (the car pleases him), even though the English translation uses a direct object. Such usage of le is not a violation of the formal rules of Spanish or a true example of leà smo, but rather shows a different understanding of how some verbs function.

Earning a Supply Chain Management Degree Supply chain management involves overseeing aspects of the supply chain. A supply chain is a network of interconnected businesses. Each business contributes one aspect of the chain, from production to the procurement of raw materials to the transportation of materials to the manufacturing process to the consumer market to the final act of consumption. The ultimate goal of supply chain management is to make this chain run efficiently and effectively while reducing costs and delivering customer satisfaction. What a Supply Chain Management Degree Is A supply chain management degree is a type of post-secondary degree awarded to students who have completed a college, university, or business school program that focuses on the management of supply chain activities. Types of Supply Chain Management Degrees There are three basic types of supply chain management degrees that can be earned from a college, university, or business school: Bachelors Degree in Supply Chain Management - A bachelors degree program with a specialization in supply chain management consists of general education courses in addition to courses that focus exclusively on logistics and supply chain management. Although accelerated and part-time programs are available, most bachelors programs take approximately four years to complete.Masters Degree in Supply Chain Management - A masters degree or MBA degree program in supply chain management usually consists of general business courses in addition to specialized courses in supply chain management. Masters program traditionally takes two years to complete; accelerated programs can usually be completed in less time.Doctorate Degree in Supply Chain Management - A doctorate program in supply chain management requires intense study and research. Malcolm X Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

Malcolm X - Essay Example agencies were the incarnation of white oppression caused the BPP to believe that civil justice for the black community could be accomplished only through militant actions. It is not possible to comprehend the reason for the formation of the BPP or attempt to explain its violent tendencies without first examining the Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s and the specific events leading up to its establishment. The person most credited with bringing the Black Panther Party to prominence was a man called Malcolm X. Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little) did not start the Black Panther Party, but he became a powerful speaker during the Civil Rights Movement, eventually becoming more important to the cause by his death than he was in life as he inspired the movements that took place in the cities of the country. As Martin Luther King Jr. had secured the character of the Southern black, Malcolm had become the messiah of city slums in the North, Midwest and West. The semi-militant organization he headed, the Nation, grew quickly under his leadership. Malcolm was most remembered for his passionate anti-white speeches. This was an idea that was emulated by other pro-autonomy organizations. He was the target of many death threats, one of which, in 1965, was successful. Soon after Malcolm’s death, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale began forming the Black Panthers (Hollaway, 1998). Malcolm seemed perfectly suited to become the new leader of the Black empowerment movement having been born in 1925 to a half-white mother, Louise Little, and a black father, Earl Little, who headed the local branch of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (Perry, 1991). Regardless of what he might have thought of his father’s beliefs in the future, he never forgot the messages of Black pride and self-reliance he learned at his father’s knee. Although born in Nebraska, Malcolm grew up primarily in Michigan after his family fled, when he was still an infant, from the terrors

Battle of Mogadishu Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Battle of Mogadishu - Research Paper Example The SNA (Somali National Alliance) formed in August 1992 kicked off as the USC (United Somali Congress) under its leader General Mohamad Farah Aidid. The Somali National Alliance during OGS (Operation Gothic Serpent) comprised of Somali Democratic Movement and the Somali Patriotic Movement. Others comprised of combined Miriflehand Digil clans, the Habr Gedir of the USC (United Somali Congress) commanded by General Aidid, and the recently formed Southern Somali National Movement. After establishment, the Somali National Alliance (SNA) instantly set off an attack against the guerrillas of the clan of Hawadle Hawiye, who coordinated the port area of Mogadishu. Consequently, the militia was chased out of the port area, and Aidid's troops took over. The organizational structure and size of Somali troops is unknown in detail. In all, twenty to forty thousand ordinary militia followers are known to have partaken, nearly altogether of which were from Aidid's SNO (Somali National Alliance), ob taining mostly from the clan of Habar. Since 1993 Habar Gedir had been at conflict with America (Bowden 25). Shortly following the revolution, the alliance split into two factions. Ali Mahdi who later became the president led one of the factions while Mohammed Farah Aidid led the other. In 1991 September, grave fighting started in Mogadishu which lasted in the subsequent months and stretched all over the country. Over twenty thousand individuals were murdered or injured by the culmination of that year. The subsequent inter-clan conflict resulted to agriculture destruction in Somalia, which subsequently led to famishment for lots of its citizens (Bowden 30). The global community embarked on sending food provisions to cease the starvation. Control of food supplies became one of the key sources of power in Somalia. Stolen food was used to fortify the allegiance of clan leaders, and the foodstuff was normally traded with other countries for munitions. Eighty percent of relief food in th e early 1990’s was stolen. These elements steered to further starvation where an assessed three hundred thousand individuals perished and another one million individuals writhed amid 1991 and 1992. In the interim, amid 1991 and 1992 estimates show that above three hundred thousand Somalis perished of undernourishment. United Nations military sent fifty army observers to guard the dissemination of the foodstuff to Somaliain July 1992 in conformity with a resolution indorsed by disparate clan groups (Bowden 45). UNOSOM – I (Operation Provide Relief) officially commenced in August 1992, once United States’ President George H. W. Bush declared that United States army conveyances would back the cosmopolitan United Nations relief force in Somalia. Four hundred and ten C-130s set out to Mombasa in Kenya in Operation Provide Relief. The isolated areas in Somalia survived on Airlifted aid and in return minimizing reliance on truck cavalcades. Only one affiliate (USAFE) o f the 86th Supply Squadron was set out with the ground-backing group (Bowden 56). Forty tons of food and medical supplies delivered byAir Force C-130s in six months to global humanitarian organizations were a means of attempting to aid the over two million starved people in Somalia. This undertaking was unproductive owing to the
